Unravelling and weaving, sometimes simultaneously

If I give in to this urge
there will certainly be a moment…
oh, more than a moment…
probably an hour, at least,
of sheer, indulgent bliss.
Oh, sinuous temptation,
tickling me with your forked tongue
in unmentionable places.
I am reminded
by your dangerous whispers
of my mortality
of time’s brevity
of opportunity’s limitations.
But how short is life, really?
Not short enough, apparently
to avoid waking with a headache
and regrets.
Trickster, stop poking me in the id;
I have enough heartburn
without eating fire.

  1. This reminds me of the European myths of how the common folk were tempted into the practice of magic. The sin of bliss. When they found out that they had slept with a spirit, the legend was that the ensnared person would give in and follow the “old ways.”

  2. I wrote a poem about the same theme. Letting go of reality itself is a way becoming freed. The “Left Hand Path” refers to the carnal or physical over the spiritual. I wrote it in 1993 I think. I can’t adjust the spacing. argghh Any thoughts?
