Unravelling and weaving, sometimes simultaneously

Rite of Spring

I did not notice when the pecan tree leafed
because my eyes were down
and I was following
the shadows from the sun
perpetually forward
processing
an eternal bridesmaid
toward
someone else’s altar

I did not see those pale green buds
the last sure sign of spring
until some creature stirred
within the branches

and a single leaf
drifted down
like a benediction
over my head
and away
