Unravelling and weaving, sometimes simultaneously

How long ago
how long ago
how long
too far
too long ago

One night in a place
that isn’t there
but it was there
once on a time

I wore a red wig
and a fancy dress
and you ducked darts
to meet me
twisting your fingers
in dangling tassels
speaking sweet
and promising
songs in the sultry darkness
for of course you played guitar
and I twisted my fingers
in a dangling lock
of your hair
leading you out
into the night
fringe swishing

Sometimes I recall
how you were too long
and you had to sleep
kitty cornered
in the Hollywood bed
that slid around on the tile
like a Ouija planchette
when we made love

Sometimes I recall
how you ran tame
but I never knew you
and didn’t make much attempt
to rectify that
as long as you played
your guitar

Sometimes I recall
that after you left
I was wistful
but not heartbroken
that I was fine
with giving the boots away
you left in my closet
never expecting
to ever see you again

And indeed
I never did
in person

Though once
when I found out
where you were
and what you did
I wrote a letter to you
to clear my mind
and you wrote me back
full of sly nostalgia

asking about your boots

Sometimes I recall
that you are gone now
no longer polishing
the people’s iron
no longer plucking
the strings of any instrument
or heart

Sometimes I recall
that we all have a time to die
and that it wasn’t mine
and it wasn’t yours
but far too many
lost their lives between
the night you ducked the darts
and the day you were injected
and all I can do
is marvel
and wonder
and ask my angels
to bring me another round
to dim the recall
